Most web designers think of the web design process in terms of technical aspects such as wireframes, coding, and content management. The key to great design isn’t just the integration of social media buttons or slick visuals. It is important to have an overarching strategy that aligns with a website creation process that is great.
The benefits of well-designed websites go far beyond aesthetics. Various indicators, including visuals, text, and interactions, draw visitors and help people understand the product, company, and branding. Your website must have a specific goal in mind for everything on it.
However, how do you make those elements work harmoniously together? With a holistic approach to web design that combines form and function.
My process for designing a website consists of 7 steps:
- Identifying goals:
We work with the client to determine what goals the new website needs to accomplish. This is the goal of the website.
The scope of the project can be defined once we know what the site’s goals are. The required web pages and features the site will need to fulfil the goal, as well as the timeline for implementing them. - Sitemap and wireframe creation: Once the scope has been determined, we can begin developing the sitemap, defining how the content and features in the scope definition will interact.
- Now that we have a bigger picture of the site in mind, we can create content for each page, always keeping search engine optimization (SEO) in mind to help keep pages focused on a single topic.
- Our next stage will require you to have real content:
- Once we have set up the site architecture and created some content, we can start working on the visual branding. It may already be defined, but you may have to create it from scratch, depending on the client. You can use tools like mood boards, element collages, style tiles, and more to aid you in this process.
- By now, you have all your pages and have defined how they will appear to the site visitor, so you need to test it all. Automated site crawlers and manual site browsing are used to identify everything from user experience issues to broken links.
- Planning and executing your site launch is next once everything is working perfectly. Plan both the timing of the launch and the communication strategy – that is, when will you launch and how will you let people know? Let’s pop the bubbles after that.
