Hi, welcome to issue 4 from the fishbowl. This week we'll give you a quick insight into the phenomenon that is twitter.
What can twitter do for my company?
Before we answer that, some of you may have heard of Twitter recently, it's been quite popular with celebrities like Jonathon Ross, Chris Moyles and Stephen Fry, but what is it? Here's a semi-official explanation...
Twitter is a social networking and microblogging service that allows you to answer the question, "What are you doing?" by sending short text messages 140 characters in length, called "tweets", to your friends, or "followers."
Within Twitter you can follow and be followed, so essentially it is a mini publishing tool that will allow you to 'push out' and 'listen to' messages. My first question after I heard that was 'What's the use in that?', well the answer to that is on both a personal and business level. One can keep up to date with family and friends on Twitter and it can also connect current and potential customers to your product, brand or business. It all depends on your post or 'tweets'.
So to recap, basically you can post 'tweets' and follow people on Twitter.
Following people is a great resource so, at Caged Fish we tend to follow relevant, like minded people, mainly web design professionals. With these type of people we get a lot tweets of great links and information about new happenings in website programming, free tools and pointers to new sites as well as helpful resources and ideas pertaining to internet marketing of all kinds. The main rule of thumb for following is to read profiles and see if the twitterer you are thinking of following is relevant.
To find like minded people or businesses simply click the 'find people' button at the top of the twitter page, enter in a word and search. As an example if I wished to follow energy trends or ecological energy I'd pop in energy as a search and I'd find organisations like AltEnergyNews, GreenEnergy, currentenergy amongst others, each with energy relevant twitters of which I could follow.
As far as followers are concerned you'll be amazed at who follows you. On that note if you'd like to follow Caged Fish, here's our Twitter http://twitter.com/cagedfish, go to the page and (if you have an account) click the 'follow' button below our fish logo.
Twitter can be an excellent source for information and it raise the profile of your brand, product or company in an impersonal friendly way. In our opinion it will only grow as social networking continues, so nip along, sign up and start to twitter, you may even like to send us a message.
Till next time Happy Twittering
