From the Fishbowl
Issue 10
January 10
Hi, as Christmas and the New Year fade into the past, we thought that we'd start off our first newsletter of 2010 with an often misconceived subject.

What can your visitors see?

old monitorWe often get asked, "Can you get rid of all of that space around the edge of my design?" To which we normally answer, "Yes but there are dire consequences to this." Here's a little explanation of this reply…

Viewing webpages, unlike print, is done on a variety of screen sizes from 640x480 to 2560x1600. Admittedly not many people have these sizes, the average (at present) being 1024x768. You'll see from the stats below though that this is changing towards higher monitor sizes.

At Caged Fish we have always designed to the lowest common resolution, this used to be 800x600, but as I said earlier, it is now 1024x768. What does this mean in real terms? Basically most monitors will now show 'space' around the designs we do. We do not design web pages to expand as this can have awful design consequences, so we don't even go there, instead favouring a graphical technique of background images to make the website appear bigger. A good example of this is www.lesgetschaletco.com.

Getting back to the title, our friends at google have given us a very good site for checking just how many people can 'see' what on your site. Simply type your web address in the input box provided and hit 'GO', when your website appears behind the sketch, resize your browser window so that your site sits top left and you can workout the percentage of people that can view parts of your site. Here's the URL... browsersize.googlelabs.com.

We hope our ethos of Educate, Empower & Enable delivered through our 'from the fishbowl' are helping you in your internet related activities.
